What’s in a Name?

 

“Why Sonder?” you might ask. Because I always want to keep this idea at the core of my company…

 

Sonder – origin: unknown – n. the realization that each passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.

Where it all began

Long ago, a flicker started deep in my soul, quietly waiting to fully ignite. The year the world seemed to unravel was just the catalyst I needed. It was the year that I was “supposed to” retire my stay-at-home-Mom hat and head back out into corporate. Our youngest would be off to kindergarten and the days would be “mine” again. Bittersweet as that was, I was also ready to find myself again after pouring the whole of me into my family for so long.

As with so many other things in life, plans didn’t go quite as expected. A global pandemic hit, followed by continued unrest in my home country and I found my heart hurting as I watched so many around me pained by the events taking place. So much loss, so much change, so much out of our control. I, myself was grieving the loss of what might have been, of what was “supposed to” be…

Where do we go from here?

Determined to find something I could do about it, Sonder Laser Studios was born. I was preparing to get back into the work force once our youngest was off to kindergarten, and as I did, my mind raced with options. I spent many a day weighing the pros and cons of various pathways and they all came up short.

Enter 2020. While it was not our plan for all our kids to be home full time versus off at school, it turns out it was exactly what we needed. You see, I’m no stranger to seemingly insurmountable roadblocks, loss, the unexpected causing plans to suddenly and drastically change…

Because of this, I have gained a unique creativity, strong problem solving and logistic skills, a think-outside-the-box mentality and such compassion and empathy for my fellow human being. When something stands in my way, I don’t just give up. I keep fighting, I keep going, I keep brainstorming and one way or another, I figure out a way to make things work and find the good.

Who we are

At Sonder Laser Studios, we aren’t just a creative space with some pretty fantastic designs, we’re a community with a huge heart. It’s us seeing each other’s individual journeys and celebrating them together. We will honor the highs and the lows as we create beautiful pieces to last a lifetime. We recognize that we’re all different and that is simply beautiful. This journey is one of constant growth, change, and learning. As we learn and grow we will continually strive to give back and effect positive change in our little corner of this big, big world.

My response

When the universe told me my plan to return to work needed to be put on hold because our entire life had suddenly changed, I smiled and told the universe, “Hold my beer, watch me. You know I’ve got this.” (Kidding, kidding. I hate beer. HA!)

Sonder Laser Studios begins…

So, like a phoenix rising from the ashes once again, I picked myself up and got to work. I started taking one step at a time and before I knew it, Sonder Laser Studios was born. I am very glad that you’re here and I can’t wait to make this life a little more beautiful together.
