Scene One: Canalside
This vibrant scene captures the lively atmosphere of Canalside, where people glide across the ice in the foreground. Featuring Shark Girl, the NFTA Metro train car, and visitors enjoying the area, the scene also includes the Explore ‘n More Children’s Museum, complete with its giant tricycle sculpture on the roof.
In the distance, the USS The Sullivan, a historic naval ship, proudly rests at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park after being successfully righted following a hull incident. The iconic Skyway and nearby hotel provide a stunning backdrop, embodying the essence of Buffalo’s waterfront experience.
Scene Two: Art Gallery
Immerse yourself in the artistic elegance of Buffalo with this depiction of Edward B. Green’s original Albright Knox Art Gallery’s architecture. (Now the AKG Art Museum) The intricate details of hand-drawn milkweed are the perfect landing spot in the midst of a lush garden surrounding a tranquil fountain. The sign captures the grandeur of the Greek Revival masterpiece, showcasing the gallery’s architectural beauty without the modern addition.
Scene Three: The Theatre District
Take a stroll down the Plaza of Stars, where the rich cultural history of Buffalo comes to life. This scene invites you to walk towards Shea’s Buffalo, with its iconic sign lighting up the right side of the street. You’ll see the colorful mural adorning the neighboring building and the nostalgic “Tent City” billboard of the now closed building.
On the left, accurately drawn buildings include the police station, the famed Town Ballroom music venue, and many more, all fading gracefully into the distance.
In the foreground is the NFTA Metro approaching entry into the underground tunnel.
The scene comes alive with the various people out on the town for the evening in Buffalo’s Theatre District.
Creating each custom wooden sign is a labor of love that requires countless hours of meticulous work. Owner Dawn spends considerable time perfecting the intricate designs before they even reach the laser cutter. Once the blanks are run through the CO2 laser, Dawn brings them to life as stunning signs. The craftsmanship involves a variety of tools, including a complex miter saw for precise framing, a table saw to rip large sheets into sign-sized pieces, and a circular saw for cutting 4’x4′ sheets down to a manageable size. Attention to detail is paramount, and Dawn employs sanding blocks, a compressor for both compressed air and a die grinder to refine custom frame ends, as well as a vibrating sander for a smooth finish. Each sign is a testament to the dedication and skill that goes into the process, all while working under a market tent for coverage when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
